North Philadelphia can change quite a bit in a few blocks. Around North Broad Street there are apartments, university buildings, offices and businesses. Turn onto a residential street and the locksmith call may be at a rowhome with an older wood door and hardware that has been changed several times over the years.

Some calls are easy to identify immediately. The keys are locked in the car. A tenant moved out and the locks need new keying. Somebody is standing outside because the door closed behind them.
Other problems take a closer look. The deadbolt works, except when the door is closed. The business key suddenly feels rough. A lock that has been on the same rowhome for years has started behaving differently this week.
Those are usually better solved by looking at the whole setup rather than deciding in advance that a particular part needs replacing.
On an older house, you can sometimes see the history just by looking at the entrance.
There may be an older door with a newer deadbolt, a strike that has been adjusted before, several coats of paint around the hardware and screw holes from something that used to be installed there. None of that means there is automatically a problem.
It does mean we pay attention before changing things.
If your front-door lock has become difficult, try it with the door open. A deadbolt that turns easily there but gets tight once the door is shut often sends us toward the alignment between the bolt and strike. Hinges can loosen. Wood can move. A door can settle slightly after years of use.

If several exterior doors are involved, count the locks rather than only the doors. A front entrance with a keyed knob and separate deadbolt gives us two cylinders. The rear might have another, and the basement may use completely different hardware.
We can see whether compatible locks can share one new key. Sometimes they can. In a house where different owners installed different brands over time, keeping two keys may make more sense than changing good hardware just to make the key ring look tidy.
A lost car key around North Philadelphia can happen beside a house, near work, around Temple, in a parking lot or somewhere along one of the busier corridors. The place tells us where the vehicle is. The car itself tells us what kind of key work may be needed.

If the key is locked inside, tell us where it is if you can see it. If the only key has disappeared, say that instead. A lost-key job may involve making and programming another key, while a straightforward lockout is about getting back into the vehicle.
If one working spare still exists somewhere, mention it. That can make a difference depending on the vehicle.
Push-button-start cars add another version of the problem. The fob may be physically present but the vehicle suddenly does not recognize it. That is not the same situation as a fob sitting visibly on the passenger seat.

If the existing commercial lock is good, changing its keying can restore control without replacing hardware that still has years of useful life left.
Some locks give plenty of warning. They become a little harder to use, then a little worse, and everyone keeps putting off the repair because the door still opens.
Until it does not.
A key can snap after weeks of resistance. A deadbolt that needed an extra push finally refuses to move. Or there is no warning at all and the apartment door simply closes with the keys inside.

If a key broke in the cylinder, avoid pushing the piece farther inside while trying to pull it out. If the door has been difficult for a while, tell us what it was doing before today. That history can matter once we start checking the lock.
With a lockout, there is also an important difference between keys sitting safely inside and keys that are genuinely lost. If a lost set included identification or anything showing your address, it may be worth discussing the keying after access is restored.
Photos are useful when hardware has broken or the problem is difficult to explain. Show the face of the lock and, for a door that will not latch or deadbolt properly, the edge of the door too.
One of the useful things about being based on North 5th Street is that this part of Philadelphia is not just a name on our service map. We are used to the rowhomes, twins, rental properties, older doors and small businesses found throughout North Philadelphia and the neighborhoods around it.
That does not mean two jobs will be the same. One house may still have older hardware worth preserving while the next has a newer deadbolt that was installed poorly.
